How much solar panels would I need to power up our whole house?
We are considering buying and installing solar panels on our house… I don’t know how much it’ll cost us. Anyone knows where I could find a free quote? Thanks
Unfortunately without knowing your energy usage it is impossible to give an estimate on total system costs for a solar electric system. You can find out more about sizing your system by reading this article.

This is not something that will be cheap!!! In addition to many, many solar cells, you’ll also need the batteries, etc. http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/energy-efficiency/question418.htm

The referenced source provides a great link for estimating your solar panel system needs. Be prepared with your current or average electrical usage from your utility bill.
The link will even calculate down to incentives and rebates available for your location.
Some advice if considering going whole house solar is to do an energy audit and see where you might bring down your energy usage. I have included a link that might be interesting to check on this energy saving issue. Less electricity means less solar panel need.

I had considered the same thing. I was ultimately referred to a GREAT handyman site that has a section dedicated to alternative energy, specifically solar panels.
Here’s the link to the solar panel informational section of the site:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Home_Improvement_Zone_Alternative_Energy_Systems.htm
The site has everything: General information about the availability of types of solar panels, their uses, studies to the effect of solar panels, links to government sites, links to grants, links to financial options in the purchase of solar panels, and links to a host of solar panel products and those who install them.
I found it very informative.
