How much does solar panels cost to install to your house?

September 21st, 2009

How much, roughly, does solar panels cost to install for hot water for a house? Just looking for a rough idea without having to go through rigmarole of signing up to loads of different contractors before getting a quote.

i asked about 4 years ago and they said £7000! then i found out they don’t work very well anyway. save yr money.

    Ball park £10,000.
It is totally uneconomic at present UNLESS you can do plumbing and working on a roof yourself!

Give it a miss, unless you live in the Sahara.
Say goodbye to at least £5k, in 40 or so years
you may see a return on your investment.

Hmm, it depends on how many solar panels you want, or, more accurately, how many solar panels can be placed on your roof from a technical side; also there are all sorts of types of panels, varying in quality and the amount of solar energy they create.

Here’s a link to a solar power information section of a handyman site that provides you with a wealth of information, and all sorts of government links, which I understand concern grants and rebates, etc:

I hope you find this to be informative. Good luck!

The cost depends on many factors. What size is your family and how much hot water do you use? Which direction does your house roof face? Its best and cheapest if you have a section of roof that faces South. What type of existing hot water system do you have and how much work will be needed to connect it to solar. Where exactly is your house? What country, what area of the country, what other factors need to be taken into consideration like trees, other buildings etc.?
What type of solar panel do you want – flat panel or evacuated tubes? Tubes are more expensive but provide more hot water for a longer period each day.
Visit the Retscreen website. Its sponsored by the Canadian government and has masses of info for design and costing of solar, wind or hydro equipment anywhere in the world. It has instant links to equipment manufacturers, weather data and everything you will need based on the location of your property. It will even make a full cost benefit calculation for you. That way you can approach contractors with full information and able to make an informed negotiation over prices.

It depends where you are located. In Honolulu, you can get away with a flat plate about the size of a ping-pong table, about $4000 (and that’s before rebates).

In places where there is less sun, a larger system would be needed. And if freezing is a possibility, then a different technology might be appropriate, such as evacuated tubes that circulate antifreeze to a heat exchanger. That costs more.

My brother has a system this size in Hawaii. Except for freak rainy weeks in the winter, he never needs any other water heating, even with guests taking hot showers.

In Idaho(Latitude: 43.6), a two panel system will produce the majority of the hot water for a family of four. Lower the latitude the stronger the sun and the more hot water. Cost is about $9000 for a two panel system (not including the 30% federal tax credit in the USA). It is hard to state an exact payback period because it depends on your daily routine such as when you take showers do lanudry etc. Our customers have had measured payback periods of 3 to 12 years.

The cost of the installation also varies due to distance of the panels from the water heater, slope of roof, and distance from your installer.

If you are in the idaho/oregon region we would be happy to give you an estimate on an installed system: http://www.aurorapower.net/contact-us.aspx
