Am I allowed to put solar panels on my home/business in Plano Texas?

August 17th, 2009

And what are good resources to learn about solar energy from, and where can i buy solar panels.

You should call a company that installs solar panel systems. They will do the evaluation, best location, return on investment, and apply for any rebates that are available from the state.

    Sure, why not.
Whole Earth Catalog is a good start.

Check with the Chamber of Commerce in Plano, and also the Better Business Bureau there.

The actual jurisdiction lies with the building department. The answer to your question is you are allowed – but you will need a permit to install which will allow the building department to inspect your structure. Just like you cannot repair your roof without a building department permit so too, with any add on.

The building department will want to be sure your roof and structure can support the weight and wind refraction that may occur. Most likely the company or product vendor will be able to advise you best.

Although even with current energy cost that are skyrocketing – you may still want to wait on the solar panel. Wind turbines for homes have gone through a large metamorphosis lately as too, solar energy. You may regret not waiting for technology to catch up with the times. If you can hold on for a year or two – you will most likely find far more efficient alternative energy sources as well as significantly less expensive.

    Good Luck!
