The Bubble Chair As A Finest Creation Of The Outstanding Designer Eero Aarnio

July 9th, 2010

“Have you ever sat on a bubble?” If someone asked you that question, it’s a sure bet that you’ll answer no. Aside from the idea that it’s near-impossible for a bubble to become huge enough to sit on, anybody who has chased and popped bubbles as a kid know how delicate it is. But while sitting on a true bubble still remains tough in the realm of imagination, one can settle with the next best thing with a Bubble chair.

If you want to have a chair that is very comfortable to enjoy on and makes a good communication piece with visitors , the Bubble chair is a best alternative. Designed by the famous Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio, the Bubble chair is a lounge chair which appears, as its name suggests, like a huge floating bubble. The chair is actually created from a empty clear sphere of heated and blown acrylic resin, a synthetic substance known for its crystal clearlook and high defiance to wear. The chair is also fitted with a polished metal hoop on the rim for support, and fitted with two or more polyurethane cushions. And to complete the “bubble” look, the chair is suspended in the chair through a long metal chain that connects to the ceiling.

The Bubble chair was designed by Aarnio in 1968 and is based| on his earlier “Ball” chair, which has a similar spherical look but done from fiberglass. Aarnio wanted to amend the Ball chair’s design into having light in its interior, which later evolved into a completely new design consisting of a vivid spherical chair that permitted light to pass through from all corners. The choice to have the Bubble chair suspended from ceiling, but is somewhat coincidental; Aarnio thought that there was no nice way for the chair to have a “clear” pedestal.
